Walgreen Co. September Sales Increase 16.6 Percent

Pharmacy sales increased 20.8 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales rose 17.5 percent.

Calendar year-to-date sales were $15,905,521,000, an increase of 17.8 percent from $13,500,732,000 for 1999.

On Sept. 29, Walgreens added non-prescription items for sale on its Internet site. Vitamins, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics and general merchandise such as school supplies, batteries and cameras are some of the more than 18,000 items now available online. Prescription items have been available at walgreens.com since October 1999.

Walgreens opened 15 new or relocated stores during the month of September. At Sept. 30, the company operated 3,178 drugstores in 43 states and Puerto Rico, versus 2,831 a year ago.

Note: Walgreens fiscal year begins Sept. 1, so fiscal year-to-date sales are the same as the month's sales.
