Walgreen Co. September Sales Increase 15.1 Percent

DEERFIELD, Ill., Oct. 2, 2001 - Walgreen Co. had September sales of $2,030,000,000, an increase of 15.1 percent from $1,763,054,000 for the same month in 2000. Sales in comparable stores (those open at least a year) rose 9.8 percent.

September pharmacy sales increased 18.5 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales rose 14.8 percent.

Calendar year-to-date sales were $18,590,145,000, an increase of 16.9 percent from $15,897,975,000 in 2000.

Comparable store front-end sales increased 2.5 percent during September.

Walgreens opened 35 stores during September, relocated six and closed two store. At Sept. 30, the company operated 3,547 drugstores in 43 states and Puerto Rico, versus 3,178 a year ago.

Please note, monthly sales numbers are preliminary and unaudited. Also, Walgreens fiscal year begins Sept. 1, so fiscal year-to-date sales are the same as the month's sales.
