Walgreen Co. June Sales Increase 14.2%

DEERFIELD, Ill., July 5, 2006 – Walgreen Co. had June sales of $3,993,580,000, an increase of 14.2 percent from $3,497,439,000 for the same month in 2005. Sales in comparable stores (those open at least a year) rose 9.0 percent.

June pharmacy sales increased 16.0 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales increased 11.6 percent. Total prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 6.5 percent. Pharmacy sales accounted for 66.0 percent of total sales for the month.

This year's June had one additional Friday and one fewer Wednesday compared to June 2005, resulting in a negative impact of approximately 0.1 percentage points on the comparable pharmacy sales increase.

Calendar year-to-date sales were $23,848,793,000, an increase of 12.2 percent from $21,251,985,000 in 2005.

Fiscal year-to-date sales for the 10 months were $39,232,275,000, up 11.4 percent from $35,204,148,000. Comparable store sales for the fiscal year to date increased 7.3 percent.

Comparable store front-end sales increased 4.5 percent during June.

Walgreens opened 46 stores during June, including three relocations, and closed one store. At June 30, the company operated 5,293 drugstores in 46 states and Puerto Rico, versus 4,866 a year ago. Store counts include 38 home care division locations this year and 32 last year.

Please note: Monthly sales numbers are preliminary and unaudited. Comparable stores are defined as those locations open for at least 12 consecutive months without closure for seven or more consecutive days and without a major remodel or a natural disaster in the past 12 months. Relocated stores are excluded from comparable stores during their first 12 months of operation.
